MAKING ARRANGEMENTS
(For Edith Schiller Farbman)

She sleeps beside the grand
as her fingers rise and play
in dreams.

A cloud for her chair,
a pillow for her ruptured spine,
is not available.

Her life is an arm's length
of four stranded chords
she hears as a memory.

Piano keys beyond reach,
she waits for nurse, friends
and daughter to leave.

She eyes the pills.
"Enough," she hopes,
making her final arrangement.

She slips into the wings,
beside something
grander.

Listening,
we still feel her
music.
